  • CO2: Element or Compound? Understanding Carbon Dioxide
    CO2 is a compound. Here's why:

    * Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means. Examples are carbon (C) and oxygen (O).

    * Compounds are formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio.

CO2 (carbon dioxide) is composed of one carbon atom (C) and two oxygen atoms (O) bonded together. This fixed ratio makes it a compound.
