  • Proteins: The Biological Catalysts Driving Life
The class of organic molecules that includes biological catalysts is proteins.

    Here's why:

    * Biological catalysts are called enzymes. Enzymes are specialized proteins that speed up biochemical reactions without being consumed in the process.

    * Proteins are complex macromolecules made up of chains of amino acids. The specific sequence and arrangement of these amino acids determine the unique three-dimensional structure of each protein.

    * This structure allows enzymes to bind to specific molecules (substrates) and facilitate chemical reactions. They do this by lowering the activation energy required for the reaction to occur.

While some RNA molecules can also act as catalysts (called ribozymes), proteins are the primary and most well-known biological catalysts.
