  • Resazurin and Anaerobic Cultures: Why They Don't Mix
Resazurin is not a useful media additive for the study of anaerobes. In fact, it's contraindicated for anaerobic cultures. Here's why:

    * Resazurin is an indicator of oxygen presence. It's a dye that changes color from blue to pink in the presence of oxygen. This makes it useful for aerobic cultures, where it signals the presence of oxygen contamination.

    * Anaerobes are killed by oxygen. They thrive in environments devoid of oxygen. Adding resazurin to their media would introduce oxygen, making it unsuitable for their growth.

Instead of resazurin, anaerobic media often uses other indicators like:

    * Methylene blue: This indicator is colorless in anaerobic conditions and turns blue in the presence of oxygen.

    * Resazurin (in low concentrations): While resazurin is generally avoided, it can be used in very low concentrations as a very sensitive indicator of oxygen presence.

It's essential to use the correct media and indicators for the type of culture you're working with. Using the wrong components can lead to inaccurate results and compromised sample integrity.
