  • Heterotrophs: Understanding Organisms That Consume Organic Matter
    An organism that takes in organic molecules and then breaks them down is called a heterotroph.

    Here's why:

    * Hetero means "other" and troph means "nourishment".

    * Heterotrophs cannot produce their own food like plants (autotrophs) do through photosynthesis.

    * Instead, they obtain their energy and nutrients by consuming other organisms, whether they are plants, animals, or decaying organic matter.

    * The process of breaking down these organic molecules is called cellular respiration, which releases energy for the organism to use.

    Examples of heterotrophs:

    * Animals

    * Fungi

    * Bacteria (some types)
