  • Understanding Compounds: Formation and Properties
The chemical combination of two or more elements forms a compound.

    Here's why:

    * Elements are the simplest pure substances that cannot be broken down further by chemical means.

    * Compounds are formed when two or more elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio. This means the elements lose their individual properties and form a new substance with entirely different properties.

    For example:

    * Water (H₂O) is a compound formed by the chemical combination of hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) in a 2:1 ratio. Water has completely different properties than hydrogen and oxygen.

    * Sodium chloride (NaCl), commonly known as table salt, is formed by the chemical combination of sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl). It has properties distinct from both sodium (a highly reactive metal) and chlorine (a poisonous gas).
