  • Hydrate Nomenclature: Understanding Water Molecule Prefixes
    The prefix for one molecule of water in a hydrate is mono.

    However, it is important to note that the prefix "mono" is often omitted in the name of hydrates. So, a hydrate with one molecule of water would simply be named as "hydrate" and not "monohydrate".

    For example:

    * CuSO₄·H₂O is called copper(II) sulfate hydrate, not copper(II) sulfate monohydrate.

    The prefix "mono" is only used when there is a need to distinguish between different hydrates of the same compound, like:

    * CuSO₄·5H₂O is called copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate.
