  • Hypertonic Solutions: Understanding Osmosis and Cell Shrinkage
A solution that has a greater concentration of solutes than within the cell is called a hypertonic solution.

    Here's why:

    * Hyper means "above" or "greater than".

    * Tonic refers to the concentration of solutes.

In a hypertonic solution, there are more dissolved substances outside the cell than inside. This creates a concentration gradient, causing water to move out of the cell and into the solution, in an attempt to equalize the concentration. This can lead to cell shrinkage, known as crenation.
