    The sum of chemical reactions in a cell is referred to as metabolism.

    Metabolism encompasses all the chemical processes that occur within a living organism to maintain life. It involves two major categories:

    * Catabolism: Breaking down complex molecules into simpler ones, releasing energy (e.g., glucose breakdown).

    Metabolism is a highly regulated and interconnected network of reactions, with enzymes acting as catalysts to facilitate these processes. It plays a crucial role in:

    * Energy production and utilization: Breaking down nutrients to generate ATP, the cell's energy currency.

    * Biosynthesis of essential molecules: Building proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules needed for cell structure and function.

    * Waste removal: Degrading and eliminating waste products from cellular processes.

    * Maintaining homeostasis: Regulating internal conditions like temperature, pH, and ion concentration.

    The sum of these reactions, collectively referred to as metabolism, is essential for life and allows cells to adapt and survive in their environment.
