  • John Dalton: The Father of Atomic Theory | Science Explained
The scientist credited with developing the first scientific atomic theory is John Dalton.

While ancient Greek philosophers like Democritus had proposed the idea of atoms, Dalton's theory was the first to be based on experimental evidence and to propose specific properties of atoms. He proposed that:

    * All matter is made up of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms.

    * Atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties.

    * Atoms of different elements have different masses and properties.

    * Chemical reactions involve the rearrangement of atoms, not their creation or destruction.

Dalton's atomic theory was a major breakthrough in understanding the nature of matter and paved the way for further development in the field of chemistry.
