  • Understanding Atomic Structure: Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons
This is a bit of a trick question! An atom is the most basic unit of an element. It cannot be broken down into smaller units and still retain the properties of that element.

So, atoms are not made up of other types of atoms.

However, atoms are made up of subatomic particles:

    * Protons: Positively charged particles found in the nucleus of an atom.

    * Neutrons: Neutral particles (no charge) also found in the nucleus.

    * Electrons: Negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus in shells or energy levels.

The number of protons in an atom determines what element it is. For example, all carbon atoms have 6 protons. The number of neutrons can vary, creating isotopes of an element.
