  • Ernest Rutherford: The Father of the Nuclear Atom Model | Science Direct
The scientist who developed a model of the atom that looked like a nucleus surrounded by electrons was Ernest Rutherford.

He conducted the famous Gold Foil Experiment in 1911, where he bombarded a thin gold foil with alpha particles. The results of this experiment led him to propose the following:

    * The atom has a dense, positively charged nucleus at its center. This is where most of the atom's mass is concentrated.

    * Electrons orbit the nucleus in a cloud-like manner. This means they are not in fixed orbits, but rather move randomly around the nucleus.

This model, known as the Rutherford model, revolutionized our understanding of the atom and laid the foundation for future atomic models.
