  • Electron: The Lightest Particle in an Atom - Properties & Mass Comparison
The lightest particle in an atom is the electron.

    Here's why:

    * Electrons are negatively charged particles that orbit the atom's nucleus. They have a very small mass, about 1/1836th the mass of a proton.

    * Protons are positively charged particles located in the atom's nucleus.

    * Neutrons have no charge and are also located in the nucleus. Protons and neutrons have almost the same mass, which is significantly larger than the mass of an electron.
