  • Ground State: Understanding Atomic Energy Levels
    The term for an atom whose electrons have the lowest possible energies is ground state.

    Here's why:

    * Ground State: This is the most stable and lowest energy configuration of an atom. In this state, electrons occupy the lowest available energy levels within the atom's electron shells.

    * Excited State: When an atom absorbs energy, its electrons can move to higher energy levels. This is called an excited state. The atom is less stable in this state and will eventually return to its ground state, releasing the absorbed energy.

    Think of it like stairs. The ground state is like being at the bottom of the stairs, while an excited state is like being on a higher step. The atom will naturally try to return to the bottom (ground state).
