  • Rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment: The Metal Behind the Discovery
Rutherford used gold foil in his famous gold foil experiment.

He chose gold for several reasons:

    * Thinness: Gold can be hammered into extremely thin sheets, allowing alpha particles to pass through.

    * Density: Gold is a dense metal, which would help deflect alpha particles that do encounter atoms.

    * Chemical Inertness: Gold is relatively unreactive, meaning it wouldn't easily react with the alpha particles.

The use of gold foil led to the groundbreaking discovery of the atomic nucleus.
