    The numbers in a chemical formula that show the number of each type of atom in a compound are called subscripts.

    For example, in the formula H₂O (water), the subscript "2" indicates that there are two hydrogen atoms, while the lack of a subscript after the "O" implies that there is one oxygen atom.
