    The subatomic particle that determines reactivity is the electron. Here's why:

    * Electrons in the outermost shell (valence electrons) are involved in chemical bonding. Chemical reactions occur when atoms interact by sharing or transferring electrons.

    * The number of valence electrons determines an element's tendency to gain, lose, or share electrons. This tendency directly affects how readily an atom will react with other atoms.

    * Elements with similar numbers of valence electrons often exhibit similar chemical properties. This is the basis of the periodic table, where elements are arranged in groups based on their reactivity.

    While protons and neutrons are also important for atomic structure, they primarily contribute to the atom's mass and nuclear stability. They don't directly influence how an atom interacts with other atoms in chemical reactions.
