    The process of a substance going directly from the solid phase to the gas phase is called sublimation.

    Here are some examples of sublimation:

    * Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) sublimates at room temperature, forming a gas.

    * Mothballs slowly sublimate over time, releasing vapors that repel insects.

    * Snow and ice can sublimate in cold, dry conditions.

    The opposite process, where a gas goes directly to a solid, is called deposition.
