  • What are Salts? Understanding Acid-Base Reactions
The minerals which form in a solution from acids and bases are called salts.

    Here's why:

    * Acids release hydrogen ions (H+) in solution.

    * Bases release hydroxide ions (OH-) in solution.

    * When an acid and a base react, they neutralize each other, forming water (H2O) and a salt.

    Example:

    * Hydrochloric acid (HCl) + Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) → Sodium chloride (NaCl) + Water (H2O)

Sodium chloride (NaCl) is a common salt, formed by the reaction of a strong acid (HCl) and a strong base (NaOH).

So, salts are the ionic compounds formed by the reaction of an acid and a base. They can be found naturally in the environment, such as in the ocean, or they can be synthesized in laboratories.
