  • Vinegar and Oil: Are They a Mixture? | Chemistry Explained
Yes, vinegar and oil are a mixture. Here's why:

    * Mixtures are combinations of two or more substances where each substance keeps its own properties.

    * Vinegar is primarily water and acetic acid.

    * Oil is a type of fat.

When you combine vinegar and oil, the vinegar and oil don't chemically react to form a new substance. They remain separate and distinct. You can see this when you shake a bottle of vinegar and oil dressing – the oil will eventually separate from the vinegar again.

This type of mixture is called a heterogeneous mixture, meaning the components are not evenly distributed.
