  • Understanding Atomic Nucleus: Protons and Neutrons Explained
The nucleus of an atom contains two types of particles:

    * Protons: These particles have a positive (+) charge. The number of protons in an atom defines what element it is. For example, all carbon atoms have 6 protons.

    * Neutrons: These particles have no charge (they are neutral). The number of neutrons can vary within an element, creating isotopes.

While the nucleus contains protons and neutrons, it doesn't contain electrons. Electrons orbit the nucleus in shells.
