  • Understanding Atomic Nucleus Particles: Protons & Neutrons
The nucleus of an atom contains two types of particles:

    * Protons: These particles have a positive electrical charge and contribute to the atom's atomic number.

    * Neutrons: These particles have no electrical charge (they are neutral).

The number of protons determines what element the atom is. For example, all carbon atoms have 6 protons. The number of neutrons can vary, creating different isotopes of the same element.
