  • Nitrogen: Properties, Classification & Position on the Periodic Table
    Nitrogen is a nonmetal.

    Here's why:

    * Location on the Periodic Table: Nitrogen is located in Group 15 (also known as the pnictogens) of the periodic table. Most elements in this group are nonmetals.

    * Physical Properties: Nonmetals generally have the following characteristics:

    * They are poor conductors of heat and electricity.

    * They tend to be brittle (easily broken) in their solid state.

    * They have low melting and boiling points.

    * They can be gases, liquids, or solids at room temperature.

    * They often exist as diatomic molecules (like N2).

    * Chemical Properties: Nonmetals tend to gain electrons when they form chemical bonds, becoming negatively charged ions (anions).

Nitrogen fits all of these criteria, confirming its classification as a nonmetal.
