  • Agarose: Chemical Composition, Structure & Properties - A Comprehensive Guide
    Agarose is a linear polymer made up of repeating units of agarobiose, which is a disaccharide composed of:

    * D-galactose (a six-carbon sugar)

    * 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose (a modified six-carbon sugar)

    These agarobiose units are linked together by alternate α-(1→3) and β-(1→4) glycosidic bonds.

    In addition to the main agarobiose structure, agarose can also contain small amounts of other sugars like sulfate, uronic acids, and pyruvic acid as well as proteins and salts.

    The presence of these additional components can vary depending on the source of the seaweed from which the agarose is extracted, resulting in slight variations in the physical properties of the agarose.
