  • Carbon: Metal, Nonmetal, or Gas? Properties & Forms
Carbon is neither a metal nor a gas. It's a nonmetal.

    Here's why:

    * Metals are typically shiny, malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity. Carbon doesn't fit these characteristics.

    * Gases are substances that have no fixed shape or volume. Carbon exists as a solid at room temperature.

Carbon is a solid nonmetal with unique properties. It can exist in different forms, like diamond (hardest known natural substance) and graphite (used in pencils).
