  • Silicon: Metalloid or Metal? Understanding Its Position in the Periodic Table
Silicon is neither an alkali metal nor an alkaline earth metal. It is a metalloid, also known as a semimetal.

    Here's why:

    * Alkali metals are found in Group 1 of the periodic table (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr). They are highly reactive, soft metals that readily form +1 cations.

    * Alkaline earth metals are found in Group 2 of the periodic table (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra). They are also reactive metals, but less so than alkali metals, and form +2 cations.

    * Metalloids have properties that fall between metals and nonmetals. They can conduct electricity under certain conditions and have varying degrees of reactivity. Silicon is a good example of a metalloid, known for its use in semiconductors.
