  • Saltwater: Solution, Colloid, or Suspension? Understanding Mixtures
Salt water is a solution. Here's why:

    * Solution: A homogeneous mixture where one substance (the solute) dissolves completely into another substance (the solvent). In salt water, the salt (NaCl) dissolves into its ions (Na+ and Cl-) and disperses evenly throughout the water.

    * Colloid: A heterogeneous mixture where particles are dispersed throughout a medium but are larger than those found in a solution. Examples include milk, fog, and paint.

    * Emulsion: A type of colloid where one liquid is dispersed throughout another liquid. Examples include mayonnaise and milk.

    * Suspension: A heterogeneous mixture where particles are large enough to settle out over time. Examples include sand in water or muddy water.

Since salt dissolves completely in water, it forms a homogeneous mixture, making it a solution, not a colloid, emulsion, or suspension.
