  • Calcium Carbonate & Aluminum Hydroxide: How Antacids Neutralize Stomach Acid
Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)₃) are both antacids, meaning they help neutralize excess stomach acid.

    Here's how they work:

    * Calcium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach, producing calcium chloride (CaCl₂), water (H₂O), and carbon dioxide (CO₂). This reaction neutralizes the acid, reducing its concentration.

    * Aluminum hydroxide also reacts with HCl, forming aluminum chloride (AlCl₃) and water. This reaction also neutralizes the acid.

Both antacids are commonly used to relieve heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux.
