Here's how they work:
* Calcium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach, producing calcium chloride (CaCl₂), water (H₂O), and carbon dioxide (CO₂). This reaction neutralizes the acid, reducing its concentration.
* Aluminum hydroxide also reacts with HCl, forming aluminum chloride (AlCl₃) and water. This reaction also neutralizes the acid.
Both antacids are commonly used to relieve heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux.
