  • Origin of Earth's Oxygen: The Role of Cyanobacteria
    The first major source of oxygen gas on Earth was cyanobacteria.

    These single-celled organisms, also known as blue-green algae, evolved around 3.5 billion years ago and were the first organisms to produce oxygen through photosynthesis.

    Before cyanobacteria, the Earth's atmosphere was largely devoid of oxygen. The oxygen produced by cyanobacteria gradually built up in the atmosphere over millions of years, eventually leading to the oxygen-rich atmosphere we have today.
