  • Physical vs. Chemical Change: Ice Melting & Reaction with Sodium Explained
This is a combination of both physical and chemical changes:

    * Physical Change: The ice melting is a physical change. The state of the water changes from solid (ice) to liquid (water), but the chemical composition (H₂O) remains the same.

    * Chemical Change: The reaction of water (from the melted ice) with sodium is a chemical change. Sodium reacts vigorously with water, producing sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H₂). This is a chemical reaction because new substances are formed with different chemical properties.

The overall process is a combination of both physical and chemical changes.
