Here's how it works:
* Electrolysis: Chlorine is produced through the electrolysis of brine (a concentrated solution of sodium chloride in water).
* Process: In this process, an electric current is passed through the brine solution, separating the sodium chloride into its constituent elements: chlorine gas (Cl₂) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
* Other sources: While salt is the primary source, chlorine can also be obtained from other sources like:
* Seawater: Seawater contains dissolved salts, including sodium chloride, which can be used for chlorine production.
* Other chlorides: Chlorine can be obtained by electrolysis of other chloride compounds, such as potassium chloride (KCl).
So, although chlorine is a highly reactive element, we can efficiently extract it from the readily available and abundant compound, sodium chloride.
