  • Carbon Dioxide: Reactant or Product? Understanding Its Role in Chemistry
    Carbon dioxide (CO2) can be both a product and a reactant depending on the chemical reaction. Here's why:

    Product:

    * Combustion: When fuels like wood, oil, or natural gas burn, they react with oxygen (O2) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). This is a common example where CO2 is a product.

    * Cellular Respiration: Living organisms, including humans, use oxygen to break down sugars and produce energy. This process releases carbon dioxide as a waste product.

    Reactant:

    * Photosynthesis: Plants use carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, along with water and sunlight, to produce their own food (sugars) and oxygen. Here, CO2 is a key reactant.

    * Carbonation: When CO2 is dissolved in water, it forms carbonic acid (H2CO3). This is what makes fizzy drinks carbonated.

    In short:
