  • Water (H₂O): Covalent or Ionic? Understanding Chemical Bonds
H₂O (water) is a covalent compound.

    Here's why:

    * Covalent bonds form when atoms share electrons. In water, the oxygen atom shares electrons with each of the two hydrogen atoms.

    * Ionic bonds form when one atom completely transfers an electron to another atom, creating oppositely charged ions that attract each other.

Water doesn't have a complete transfer of electrons; it's a sharing of electrons, which makes it a covalent compound.
