  • Sulfur and Iron Filings: Mixture vs. Solution - Understanding the Difference
Powdered sulfur and iron filings form a mixture. Here's why:

    * Mixtures are combinations of substances where each substance retains its individual properties. You can physically separate the components of a mixture.

    * Solutions are homogeneous mixtures where one substance (the solute) dissolves completely into another (the solvent).

In the case of sulfur and iron filings:

    * You can see both components – you can distinguish the yellow sulfur from the gray iron filings.

    * They don't chemically react – the sulfur and iron don't combine to form a new substance.

    * They can be easily separated – you could use a magnet to separate the iron filings from the sulfur.
