  • Xylem Transport: Understanding Water & Mineral Movement in Plants
Xylem transports water and minerals in one direction: upwards from the roots to the rest of the plant.

This is due to the unique structure of xylem vessels, which are long, hollow tubes made of dead cells. These tubes are connected end-to-end, forming a continuous pathway for water movement. The water is pulled upwards by the forces of transpiration (water evaporation from leaves) and cohesion (attraction between water molecules).
