  • Iron Oxide: Understanding Its Composition and Place in the Periodic Table
Iron oxide isn't a single element found on the periodic table. It's a compound made up of two elements:

    * Iron (Fe), found in group 8, period 4 of the periodic table.

    * Oxygen (O), found in group 16, period 2 of the periodic table.

Iron oxide is a combination of these two elements in different ratios. The most common forms are:

    * Iron(II) oxide (FeO): Also known as ferrous oxide.

    * Iron(III) oxide (Fe₂O₃): Also known as ferric oxide or rust.

The periodic table only shows individual elements, not compounds.
