  • Oxidation: Understanding Chemical Reactions with Oxygen
When oxygen binds to a substance, it's called oxidation.

This is a very general term, though, and can refer to a wide range of chemical processes. Here are some examples:

    * Rusting: When iron reacts with oxygen and water, it forms iron oxide, which is commonly known as rust.

    * Burning: This is a rapid oxidation process that releases heat and light.

    * Respiration: Living organisms take in oxygen and use it to break down food for energy, releasing carbon dioxide as a byproduct.

    * Combustion: This is a chemical process where a substance reacts rapidly with an oxidant, typically oxygen, to produce heat and light.

Key Point: Oxidation is a chemical reaction where a substance loses electrons. In many cases, this loss of electrons is due to the gaining of oxygen atoms.
