    The number of atoms each element present in a molecule is indicated by subscripts.

    For example, in the molecule H₂O (water):

    * The subscript "2" after the "H" indicates that there are two hydrogen atoms.

    * The subscript "1" after the "O" (which is usually not written) indicates that there is one oxygen atom.
