  • Nitrogen: Molecule or Atom? Understanding Nitrogen's Structure
    Nitrogen is a molecule.

    Here's why:

    * Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter. They are the smallest unit of an element that retains the chemical properties of that element.

    * Molecules are formed when two or more atoms bond together.

Nitrogen gas, which makes up the majority of the Earth's atmosphere, exists as a diatomic molecule (N₂). This means two nitrogen atoms are bonded together.
