  • Ocean Composition: Understanding What Makes Up the Sea
The ocean isn't a single substance, but rather a complex mixture of many things:

    * Water: The most abundant component, making up about 96.5% of the ocean by mass.

    * Salts: Dissolved salts, primarily sodium chloride (table salt), make up about 3.5% of the ocean's mass. This gives the ocean its salty taste.

    * Dissolved gases: Oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen are present in the ocean, supporting marine life and influencing the Earth's climate.

    * Organic matter: This includes living organisms (plants, animals, bacteria) and decaying matter.

    * Minerals: Inorganic compounds like calcium carbonate, magnesium, and silica are present in varying amounts.

    * Suspended particles: These can be sand, silt, clay, and other materials that are carried by currents.

Therefore, the ocean can be best described as a saltwater solution, a vast and dynamic mixture of various components.
