  • Water: Element or Compound? Understanding H₂O
Pure water is a compound. Here's why:

    * Elements are the simplest forms of matter that cannot be broken down further by chemical means. Examples include hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O).

    * Compounds are formed when two or more elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio. Water (H₂O) is formed by the chemical combination of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

Since water is composed of multiple elements (hydrogen and oxygen), it is a compound.
