  • Acid Rain: Understanding the Gases Responsible & Their Formation
The main constituents of acid rain are sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃).

While these are acids, they aren't gases themselves. They are formed from the reactions of gaseous pollutants:

    * Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), primarily nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), with water, oxygen, and other chemicals in the atmosphere.

So, while not the direct acid, sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) are the main gases responsible for acid rain.
