  • Understanding Atomic Nucleus: Protons & Neutrons Explained
    The nucleus of an atom contains two types of subatomic particles:

    * Protons: Positively charged particles that determine the element of the atom. The number of protons in an atom is called its atomic number.

    * Neutrons: Neutrally charged particles that contribute to the mass of the atom. The number of neutrons in an atom can vary, resulting in different isotopes of the same element.

    While protons and neutrons are the main constituents of the nucleus, it's important to note that the nucleus can also contain other particles, such as:

    * Nuclear particles: These are short-lived particles that are produced in nuclear reactions and decay processes.

    * Virtual particles: These are theoretical particles that constantly appear and disappear within the nucleus, influencing its properties.

    However, for the purpose of understanding basic atomic structure, protons and neutrons are the key components of the nucleus.
