  • Copper Carbonate Composition: Elements & Formula (CuCO3)
Copper carbonate is a compound made of:

    * Copper (Cu): This is the metallic element that gives the compound its characteristic green color.

    * Carbon (C): This is a non-metal element found in the carbonate ion.

    * Oxygen (O): This is a non-metal element that is also part of the carbonate ion.

The chemical formula for copper carbonate is CuCO₃. This formula tells us that each molecule of copper carbonate contains one copper atom, one carbon atom, and three oxygen atoms.

There are actually two main forms of copper carbonate:

    * Malachite: This is a green, naturally occurring mineral with the formula Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂. It contains copper, carbonate, and hydroxide ions.

    * Azurite: This is a blue, naturally occurring mineral with the formula Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂. It contains copper, carbonate, and hydroxide ions.

While both malachite and azurite are copper carbonates, they differ in their chemical formulas and resulting colors.
