  • Water: Compound or Element? Understanding Chemical Composition
    Water is a compound.

    Here's why:

    * Elements are the simplest pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. Examples include hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O).

    * Compounds are formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio.

Water (H₂O) is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, bonded together chemically. Therefore, it is a compound.
