  • Selenium: The Chemical Cousin of Sulfur - Properties & Reactivity
The element with properties and reactivities most similar to sulfur is selenium (Se).

    Here's why:

    * Same Group: Both sulfur and selenium belong to Group 16 (VIA) of the periodic table, also known as the chalcogens. Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties due to having the same number of valence electrons.

    * Similar Electron Configuration: Sulfur and selenium have similar electron configurations in their outer shells, which strongly influences their reactivity.

    * Similar Oxidation States: Both elements can exhibit a range of oxidation states, including -2, +2, +4, and +6, leading to similar types of compounds.

    * Nonmetallic Character: Both sulfur and selenium are nonmetals, sharing characteristics like poor conductivity and a tendency to form covalent bonds.

While other elements in Group 16 (oxygen, tellurium, and polonium) also share similarities with sulfur, selenium is the closest analog due to its proximity on the periodic table.
