  • Oxygen: Element or Compound? Understanding Its Nature
    Oxygen is an element.

    Here's why:

    * Element: A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Oxygen exists as a diatomic molecule (O2), but it's still considered a single element.

    * Compound: A substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically combined in a fixed ratio. For example, water (H2O) is a compound.

    * Homogeneous mixture: A mixture where the components are evenly distributed throughout. For example, saltwater is a homogeneous mixture.

    * Heterogeneous mixture: A mixture where the components are not evenly distributed. For example, sand and water is a heterogeneous mixture.

Since oxygen is a pure substance and cannot be broken down further, it is classified as an element.
