  • Sulfur: Element or Compound? Understanding Purity & Mixtures
Sulfur is an element, not a compound.

    Here's why:

    * Elements are the simplest pure substances that cannot be broken down further by chemical means. They are made up of only one type of atom.

    * Compounds are formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio.

Since sulfur is found in nature as a single type of atom (S), it is an element.

Regarding homogenous and heterogeneous, these terms describe mixtures, not pure substances like elements:

    * Homogeneous mixtures have a uniform composition throughout.

    * Heterogeneous mixtures have a non-uniform composition, with distinct parts.

Since sulfur is a pure element, it is neither homogeneous nor heterogeneous.
