  • 1808 Chemistry: Why Soda Wasn't an Element
In 1808, soda was not an element.

    Here's why:

    * Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means.

    * Soda (also known as sodium carbonate, Na2CO3) is a compound made up of the elements sodium (Na), carbon (C), and oxygen (O).

While the concept of elements was established much earlier, the understanding of chemical composition and the ability to identify elements was developing throughout the 19th century.
