* Heterogeneous mixtures have components that are not evenly distributed throughout the mixture. You can usually see the different parts.
* Sodium chloride is a white, crystalline solid.
* Sand is a mixture of various minerals, often with a grainy texture and a range of colors.
If you mix salt and sand together, you'd be able to see the individual salt crystals and sand grains. They wouldn't dissolve into each other, and you could physically separate them (for example, by using a sieve).
