  • Understanding Rust: The Chemical Process of Metal Oxidation
The reaction of a metal with oxygen to form rust is called oxidation.

More specifically, it's a type of oxidation called corrosion, which refers to the deterioration of a material due to a chemical reaction with its environment. In the case of rust, the metal (usually iron) reacts with oxygen and water in the presence of an electrolyte (like salt) to form iron oxide (rust).
